Aisling wandered around Slateport's night market, sucking on her usual cherry lollypop as she browsed each stall's wares. If certain products seemed to make their way into her pockets, then it was all simply a coincidence that had nothing to do with her sticky fingers.

She had ignored the low hum at first, even as it grew louder, accompanied by the raised voices of some of the market attendees. Finally, when the sound distinguished itself as a buzzing, Aisling peered through the crowd. Her eyes widened as she made out a swarm of combee charging through the streets.

Then, Aisling realised where she was standing – right next to a florist, the bouquet of roses she had been admiring still in her hand. With a cry, she tossed away the flowers and hunkered down, throwing her hood over her head and hoping that the combee would ignore her.

Thank Arceus it was Combee and not Beedrill.

Having worked closely with her own in tandem with Sandy, Shalin knew just how much their stings hurt. The force they thrust their needles in and out of their victims with was painful enough. The corrosive venom on top of that made it agonizing, and was even lethal if the stinger remained inside the victim for too long.

The Combee problem plaguing Slateport's Night Market was enough of a problem that their Rangers had enlisted one of the few true insect specialists within the Rangers: Captain Shalin Nariya of Petalburg. She had just arrived to start a dance game session at Slateport's Round One when she received the notification that her services was needed. After Shalin clicked open Queen Zing's Poké Ball, the saddled, blue-eyed Shiny Beedrill zipped toward her and embraced her with both her foreleg stings. The Captain scurried aboard and buzzed toward the site where AISLING O'CONNOR was taking cover, the female perhaps hearing the menacing sound...

Unfortunately, the Combee did not ignore her. In fact, a Shiny Beedrill (it's leader?) seemed to materialise out of the swarm. If Aisling didn't have her lollypop stuffed in her mouth, she would have let out a scream.

She got her wits together enough to call forth her Flareon – perhaps it was about time she abandoned her habit of keeping her pokemon primarily in their Pokeballs – and the fire type pokemon sprung forth, standing protectively in between its owner and the Shiny Beedrill.

Flareon let out a threatening growl, raising its hackles. It was only then did Aisling realise that there was someone riding the Beedrill.

"Control your Combee!" She shouted, with a mixture of anger and fear, eying the Combee which did not seem to be obeying this woman.

This was looking like more and more of a disaster. Not only was the Combee infestation worse than she anticipated, but what she assumed was a local resident looked to turn against the Captain. She had to set the record straight.

The blue-eyed bug landed within earshot of Aisling. "They're not my Combee!" Shalin replied as the smaller insects turned toward the market's entrance, the sun getting lower in the sky. The giant's presence seemed to be working, sending at least some of the wilds elsewhere. "Captain Shalin Nariya, Petalburg. Slateport Ranger HQ's requested my help with this Combee problem. We don't mean you any harm!"

Aisling was momentarily taken aback as the stranger asserted that the Combee didn’t belong to her. She flushed with embarrassment but was too proud to apologise and admit she was wrong. It was the stranger’s fault for riding around a Beedrill in the first place!

"Whatever." She grumbled and then ducked near an overturned crate to dodge a Combee that was trying to Bug Bite her. "Then hurry up and help me!"

Flareon seemed to believe that Aisling had been addressing it instead. It yipped loudly and began a Fire Spin, sending a fierce vortex of fire towards the Combee to trap them inside.

A nearby bookkeeper let out a scream of horror, swooping towards his books to save them from being accidentally torched amongst the chaos.

Shalin knew that Combee didn't like fire, but an urban area was not the place to detonate fire-type attacks. Without a water-type Pokémon, she had little choice but to douse the flames in a more inefficient manner. It would work, but it would put more stress on the Pokémon she used to do the job. Clicking open her Frosmoth's Poké Ball, the giant ice moth glittered in the rising moonlight. Just like the Beedrill, the oversized bug also wore a saddle. Just who was this Captain? She certainly had one odd taste in travel.

"Michiko, ICY WIND!" The ice-type swerved such that the bookkeeper and his stock would be spared from the freezing wind that would leave the temperature-shocked Combee unable to fly. A hair-raising buzz from Queen Zing would hold the stragglers back... but also make it difficult for Shalin to hear anything else. How did she not dissolve into paste sitting between a giant Beedrill's wings churning at close to full speed?

"Flareon, no!" Aisling's heart sank, not because of the fire spin's destruction, but because she dreaded the hefty fine the bookstore might slap her with.

Luckily, the so-called 'Captain Shalin Nariya' reacted swiftly, releasing her Frosmoth, who unleashed an Icy Wind. The chill swept over the area, dousing the flames before they could spread further. The once-singed swarm of Combee now found themselves frozen in mid-air.

Aisling quickly grabbed a handful of Flareon's scruff, preventing it from causing any more chaos. Frozen, the Combee's buzzing ceased, leaving an eerie silence in their wake.

The nearby bookkeeper, misunderstanding the situation, shook his fist furiously at both Aisling and Shalin. He cursed them both, assuming they were in cahoots, and demanded they pay for the damage. Aisling ignored his outburst, her attention focused on scanning for any Combee that might have escaped the icy fate.

She would not admit it, but she was suddenly thankful for the Slateport Ranger HQ and for the presence of this woman, strange though she may be.
